What was missing from Skyrim you? I mean its a massive overworld of freedom and choice letting you do anything (and after it was annouced Same sex marrage was included, Anyone) your mind could possably think up. Set a dragon on a small village and watch the firewords? Go for it, make a small mountain of deer corpses and decalre yourself the Elk God? No problem, Watch a horse glitch into something we just cant stop laughing at for some reason, why the hell not? Its Freedom at its core.
Only its not. Gamers have found there is one action you cannot do, one action that is so game breaking that it

Some of the children in the game are REALLY annoying…
To be fair Traffic Wardens are annoying, its still some what taboo to run them through with a broadsword.
give me a harder math problem. come on. anyways who the hell wants to kill a kid? you have to be a psycho to want to do that..
You’re stabbing adults, animals, all sorts of shit. Suddenly violence is unacceptable, but only against children? What twisted logic is that to support not putting this feature in? Violence is wrong full stop. But it’s a video game. Who is it actually hurting?
Are you that worried that people are going to go out and kill children as a result of this mod? Why aren’t people going out into the streets now, and stabbing people, under the delusion of working for the Dark Brotherhood? Because, and i’m fairly sure of this, I’ve never gone around acting out violent scenes from a game.
It’s an adult game. You should have the freedom to do this stuff. Obviously the world of Tamriel isn’t realistic, but it should at least be bloody consistent.
“why do you even want to kill children?” – Why do you want to kill foxes, elk, rabbits. Why do you want to stab, maim and ruin the “lives” of characters in game? Don’t tell me you’ve gone through the game a saint without the slightest hint of bloodshed.
“anyways who the hell wants to kill a kid? you have to be a psycho to want to do that..” – You have to be a “psycho” to kill anything. But the game lets you kill most things regardless. Why stop at a slightly smaller character model and a higher voice sound file?
The point is not the straw man “Oh you think people will want to kill children if they can in game?!” the problem is their are far, far more reasons to not allow the murder of Children from a PR and in some cases moralistic (no matter how much you consider it a non point the killing of a child is always the greater crime, for the same reasons child abuse is always a much more Taboo and punished crime than GBH etc) stand point than anyone can come up with for a pro child killing stand point. Some annoying lines repeated from the little turds Vs the Billbo the Clown Fox news special it will most likely create is not a trade off that Bethesda found appealing.
The problem is rather than understand this, people seem angered at this apparent stab at their liberty enough to spend time allowing you to go ahead and do this. Just that it is bizarre that rather than just shrugging and living with it, people took a stand for something quite bizarre.
One thinks how different the reaction would be if the Mod allowed you
commit the worst crime of all, Rape. You could use the same freedom argument for its creation, But…no. I can’t see the any actual benefit for its inclusion apart from a mass of bad press and some bad tastes in peoples mouths.
I have no want to Ban the use or creation of this mod, but I just question its need to even exist.
Mind, the worst complaint you could level against me is my dire proof reading ability… all the Uncapitalised ‘I’s…oh dear.
Danny boy, obviously you don’t have a clue what video games are about.
I. M. M. E. R. S. I. O. N.
Immersion. Google it.
When after dragon’s attack a kid who was in flames seconds ago, gets up and walks away like nothing ever happened, you have all the reasons to tell that Bethesda game devs took your money for nothing, giving you a half-baked semi-product.
It’s supposed to be a role-playing game. And they advertise it as an “open world” game. But it’s clear they are just full of crap when some NPCs die and the others – and not only kids – are invisible. Maybe it’s okay for some ignorant like you, for some casual sunday gamer, but for a rpg gaming veteran it’s going against the spirit of game. Fallout 1 and 2 had the option to kill kids and after doing this, you’ve earned a reputation (perk) of childkiller, shunned by the society. That was a perfect solution: it didn’t break the immersion and at the same time didn’t encourage such vile actions.
And ffs, please stop mixing the game world with the real one. A barbarian in the first one isn’t neccesarily a barbarian in the second. And a mage. Even a child killer. Some of them even have kids and love them, too. I know I do.
“To be fair Traffic Wardens are annoying, its still some what taboo to run them through with a broadsword.”
So are over-sensitive, over-opinionated games bloggers who shoehorn their opinions into every article they write. I sincerely hope you don’t have the nerve to refer to yourself as a games ‘journalist’ because anyone who loads their articles with opinion-packed drivel simply isn’t worthy of such a title. Thank god most of the other writers on this site are a little more professional in their conduct.
As Bart pointed out, it’s about immersion. The point of games is to be able to do things that aren’t possible in real life and while I don’t have any intention of going around Skyrim setting fire to children myself, the ability to do so adds to the realism. And as for the ‘morally correct’ argument, well, we could level that at pretty much any game on the market. Is it morally right to be able to slaughter swathes of adults in Skyrim? Is it morally right to steal from people’s houses in Zelda? Is anything about GTA or the Saints Row series morally right? Of course not. But they’re GAMES. Pushing the boundaries are what they – and by association modding – are all about and at the end of the day that’s all this is.
Egads, Dare I form an opinion on the internet! The joy of screaming over opinionated then in the next breath giving being as over opinionated is something I’ve never got my head around.
I’ve been playing the balls off this game as well, sadly due to owning a PC from the 1950s on the Modless PS3 and i can’t say my immersion has broken by not being able to kill the children.
As a game play mechanic it’s not important as bad PR its close to the Chris Benoit incident. The Media dose not care in the slightest about the murder of men and women. Its not news grabbing, but on a slow news day especially when most of it is on trial via Lord Leveson at the moment and are looking for any get out, being able to actively kill children within a game which no doubt they will say every child is playing is a gold plated story someone like the Daily Mail or Fox, who are under the knife badly at this time and as a 30 second ass shot from mass effect managed to claim that it would make all children wank themselves to oblivion.
As much as PR like this means zero in the gaming community, infact I’m sure skyrim could give you swine flu and most people would still buy it, to everyone else its more bad PR and less sales. People still think we’re all a bunch of trained killers who fantasise about murdering and raping everyone to get a high score. Bad PR will stop people who are gullible buying this. sales lost are Sales lost, and I don’t think anyone from the gaming community would not buy Skyrim over the loss of being able to kill the children.
Bethesda saw the shit storm of bad PR and decided not too. People saw they couldn’t kill children in a game and decided to mod it, I thought this was a tad bizarre and creepy. Everyone somehow thinks my second name is Thompson and I’m from Florida. Oh Internet.
The only thing really breaking my Immersion in Skyrim atm is the backwards flying dragons and the sky mole people.
This raises a second point, how is the being able to kill a child any more immersion breaking than the slew of other things you can’t do? why is this such an apparent deal breaker from your somewhat angry reply yet as I mentioned a hypothetical Rape patch not? IF this topic was “Patch in Skyrim lets you heroically Molest Children” would you be coming here with the same fire and passion?
Honest question now, would you? To some it might be the same immersion breaker. But would you not find the existence of its patch a bit on the creepy side? Some people might want to Roleplay Gary Glitter, there should be a mode for them after all.
And yes that was on the Straw man side, its all bad PR in the end. I’ve left most my feeling about this and the press in my Reply to Lewis, but the point stands, it makes sense bethesda would remove this from the game, but at the same time the fact that a person making a MOD for killing people in american high schools using source got valve in a heap of bad press. And while People within game gaming community dont give a crap about it, people outside of it will continue to think its all cop killing and murder rape, that is all they have been told it is after all.
Also I still just find it creepy to put effort into making this. Much better of a mod would simply remove the little turds.
who cares if a killable children mod came out, you know the whole game is about violence. And in GTA you can just run over anyone at will without getting in trouble as well as murder police officers. you don’t think thats sick do you. its not like people are getting boners by killing children. it is not sick. they. are. not. real. so what if i want to stab a fake child in a fake universe in a fake game. im not about to even think about doing that in real life.
I’ve been a nice leftist overemotional softy and edited the post, I do understand how it was somewhat tainted with my opinions which is a no, no if i then go on to insult the people in the media to whom tainting news with their own editorial line is a their horrible bread and horrible arsehole butter. So Sorry if I irked anyone, but still, seems like an entirely unnecessary mod, which while as I said I have zero interest in stopping I can find creepy.
Also This (http://www.gamebreakers.co/2011/11/parents-name-their-son-dovahkiin-and-win-free-bethesda-games-for-life/) is still the most terrifying news to ever come out of Skyrim.
I believe there are certain people in this comments section whom may have a chance in the author industry, and just because its the internet I’ll throw in a lol
This game is based on a time when people didn’t care about what happened to kids. But then again I guess dragons and stuff wasn’t around. But this is a game, if someone want to go around killing kids and stuff, it not being in a game won’t stop them. In fact if it was in the game that might give little Jimmy up the road a day or two to spend alive before Mr.Smith comes in his pedo truck to take him away with his offers of candy. Video games are meant to be stuff you do because you can’t do it in real life. It is a world of where you can be whoever you won’t and not have any consequences. Because in real life killing a kid no matter how annoying is bad. But in a game, no one cares. So stop being over protective, because the more to hide them from it, the more they want it. Like boobs.
